Ahh, Emmy season. It might be my favourite time of year, more than Christmas or when McDonald’s brings back the McRib. As usual my heart quickened as the list of nominees was read out (by Cat Deeley and Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba this year) and the results brought out a mixture of shock, happiness, and dread. I’ve had a few hours to digest my gut reactions so read on to see what I thought about this year’s nominations.
Part I: The Good
At long last, Tatiana Maslany has finally beem nominated for an Emmy. Let all of Tumblr rejoice! It proves that all you need to do is play six (!!!) different characters consistently well over the course of three seasons to get recognized for your work.
In fact, the Emmys kind of knocked it out of the park where female comedy actors are concerned. Amy Poehler got a well-deserved nomination for the final season of Parks and Recreation (the show got a nod too! This one’s for you, Lil Sebastian!) which almost makes up for the fact that I will never see Leslie Knope again.
Amy Schumer also got a nomination for her amazing Inside Amy Schumer, and actual queen Julia Louis-Dreyfus returns to this category for playing Veep’s Selena Meyer (she won three times for Veep alone and she’ll probably win again – there’s nothing Emmy voters love more than repeat winners).
I also loved the love voters showed Netflix’s The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Tituss Burgess in particular. I don’t know about you guys but I have been singing “Peeno Noir” (“Rosanne Barr! Caviar! Upturned car!”) ever since I first saw the show.
I know I shouldn’t really be awarding the Television Academy for this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of diversity in some of the acting categories. For example, Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Burgess, and Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele) will square off for in the supporting actor in a comedy category. That’s three out of the six nominees! FIFTY PER CENT! We’re moving up in the world, you guys!
Part II: The Bad
When it comes to award shows, there will always be something to complain about. Luckily complaining is one of my favourite hobbies and particular specialties.
The very first thing I noticed (via my outraged mother) was that neither Black-ish or its star Tracee Ellis Ross were nominated for an award. This seemed odd to me; Emmy voters liked Anthony Anderson but didn’t like the show he’s on or any of his co-stars? I call shenanigans. Sorry not sorry but I would much rather see Tracee Ellis Ross nominated than another person from Modern Family (more on my vendetta against that show later).
Also, as I’ve said before, the Emmys love to nominate and award the same shows again and again and every year, I hope that they would give The Walking Dead some much-deserved love. Alas, here I am left disappointed once again. As Orphan Black’s Clone Club would know, The Walking Dead is probably too sci-fi for Emmy voters—even though it’s critically loved and highly rated.
I’m also shocked that comedy darlings Broad City weren’t nominated; it would have been nice to see something so representative of my generation have a chance at an award.
Lastly, I have a complaint that is purely emotional. I know that you guys probably haven’t watched The Knick, but it was my single favourite new show of last year and I really thought that it would get more nominations outside of director Steven Soderbergh’s nom. I mean, Clive Owen is a heroin-addicted doctor! What more could you really want in a show?!
PART III: The Ugly
I’ll keep this short: stop trying to make Modern Family happen, Emmys! I’ll admit that the first two seasons made me lightly chuckle but I’m really sick of it winning a nomination over shows like Broad City and Jane The Virgin. Let’s all move on and start watching other shows.
Then, thanks to a change in rules, my forever bae Hugh Laurie couldn’t score a nod for his role on Veep (see here for more). I really thought this would be the year that I would happy-cry whilst clutching my House DVDs to my chest, but alas it wasn’t meant to be.
What do you guys think of this year’s Emmy nominations? Comment below, or shoot me a tweet if you agree that we all deserve to see The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln and his glorious beard someday walk across the Emmy stage.
